The D&H lightening stripe is one of the most attractive contempary paint schemes. With the CPR's dual flag image now current, this scheme may soon be a thing of the past. D&H GP38 #7324 leads two NYS&W SD45s on eastbound BUME between Hornell and Gang Mills, NY in the scenic Canisteo valley. This line has been extensively rebuilt and singled but in April 1991 when this photo was taken the line was still displaying its Erie heritage with double track and semaphores. Maine Central U25B #234 leads D&H C420 #405 westbound at Wachusett Curve in Fitchburg, MA with a fairly long freight on July 20, 1984. The 234 is actually dead and the 405 is doing all of the lugging up the grade at about 2 mph. This photographer was able to jog faster then this train was going. The old ALCO will keep this up all the way to E. Deerfield without missing a beat as the grade gets steeper about 4 miles ahead at Ashburnham, MA.
